On the cusp of a record stretch

Oh look, another ration of daylight coming to an end. I have that “indoor lighting” equipment that equalizes the force field. Best get ready to throw the switches and settle down for the dark time.

Strategic warnings

A special nod to the descriptive powers of some people. This week, I spotted a job advertisement, seeking an overnight fulfillment associate. The skill set mentioned participating in zone defense, and demonstrating the three meter attitude. Obviously, a warrior with background in military strategies. Or maybe not: the ad had been placed by one of the larger box stores in the mall, and appeared (on closer examination) to be an entry level shelf stock trainee. Even the requirement of mathematical skills turned out to be “able to add, subtract, multiply and divide”. At minimum wage, as an enticement. I think this was meant for someone else.

Tickets at added value prices

Right now, I’m glad to be where I am. In term of weather, at least. Slight cloud cover, slight breeze, slight decrease in the temperature from the afternoon peak of 27C. Elsewhere (in the province of QC, for example, where eighteen people have died due to the heat wave), too much of any one thing can be bad. Right now, the dog is happy to have a cool tile floor as his lazy place.

Rainy day distractions

A classic distraction for a rainy afternoon: wander around an oversize hardware store. Big; I counted more than 60 sections, and I wasn’t even checking out that area near the main door. I could buy almost anything there. Even dog food (no, sorry Hairy Bits, I didn’t. My bad). Or an oversize garden swing.

Watching some valiant hill climbing

We were on time for our breakfast break, despite the marathon passing by the front door. Until you look at the area from the viewpoint of those about to go up yet another long hill, the idea that this area is free of summits seems reasonable. I wish I could ignore gravity.

But is it local?

Deadlines are wonderful for getting things done.  Received an email mentioning our community group meeting in two days time; wait, I still have to prepare the minutes from the last two meetings! A push, subtle in tone but efficient in getting my creative juices flowing. Fast forward to the end of the afternoon, and I’m all caught up (until later this week).

A new kind of cold

With a liter of water in a jug, I’ll find out if my newest cold box is really all the freezer I need. Rather than fill the box with all kinds of expensive goodies, I’m opting for cheap practicality. If I can’t get an ice cube in the first instance, there’s no reason to go any further.

A price check

Time for a price snapshot. In this case, gas by provinces, as of early May 2018. Meaningless, but interesting eventually. Bear with me.

Short of pole greasing

My mix of birdseed must be better than advertised; not only does the feeder attract “feathered friends”, galore, but we have the attention of the kids with tails. I call this “an afternoon at the local jailhouse”.

Can I buy the reputation, at that price?

Someone pointed out the ad, on a realtor’s page. For the asking price of a half-million, you can be the owner of a small restaurant in a small village. The location, on the only highway passing through, is easy to find (even in a raging snowstorm). The menu is popular. But then another question moves to the front of my mind.
