A new kind of cold
With a liter of water in a jug, I’ll find out if my newest cold box is really all the freezer I need. Rather than fill the box with all kinds of expensive goodies, I’m opting for cheap practicality. If I can’t get an ice cube in the first instance, there’s no reason to go any further.
So, there is method in my madness. We ordered the new freezer last month, but such things aren’t always in stock. No matter. When the sticker appeared on the kitchen calendar, I cleared the space and my agenda. Today, the truck will come.
And it did, with two lads who were prepared with the proper tools to sled our oversize ancient cooler out of the basement, replacing it with something that one person can lift. Yes, we downsized. No sense storing up for the “emergency”, when we have the time to shop. Besides, I can make bread. And yogurt. Reheated pizza and wings take a back seat to sound nutrition.
I wonder what happens to old appliances? I asked probing questions, but the response remained nebulous. Yes, sometimes a repair is applied (not to thirty year old freezers, I imagine). And there must be a place where old enameled steel finds a new life.
Here we are, on the cusp of a weekend, and all I can think about is what to put in the freezer. From the other freezer. I am not allowed to stock up any more. It’s the law. There will be journal, henceforth, tracking best before dates.
