And now we wait. The electricity had stuttered several times through the night, but sometime around first coffee, out it went. As the day continued, fully 70% of the Island went into enforced darkness. No water, no sanitation, no cell phones for many. Here, the generator has been purring, all day long, and I’ve sent off an email to the propane people, asking to be added to their next delivery run. Not an issue, yet, but since the utility announced that service won’t be stable until tomorrow, it is best to be proactive.

I’m so proud of myself. The deck is cleared of snow, as we head into a week of nasty weather, so I’m starting with a, wait for it… clean deck. Sorry, I had to.

There is a special moment in our local calendar, when the rising water table and the dropping temperatures cross. I can tell, because the sump pump starts. And doesn’t stop. There is a drain hose that freezes into a lump of uselessness, and the system just churns. I do have a work-around, involving me, a ten litre pail and patience. Just completed my workout; we should be good until either a thaw comes, or spring arrives.

Dd accounting principles at work: today the CBC carried a story. An op-ed piece, from my chair; how the oil industry in Western Canada is losing SO MUCH money, because they can’t get their product to the “right” market. Forced to accept heavy discounts on every barrel, which means that the riches are simply evaporating.

Right now, we’re on a long, slow shuffle towards winter. The dog and I drove over to the garage, this morning. Early. In return for somewhat less than $30, to snow tires were mounted, and I am formally ready when the snow begins. Oh, and I found a windshield scraper, serving as additional proof that I take this stuff seriously.

I’m impressed. Last evening, when the armada arrived in the field below us, to start harvesting in the dark, I figured on a couple of days. Nope. They went home, several hours later, with the ten acres done. I have no idea how many truckloads that represents, but I am glad for them. Farming is a gamble; this time around their efforts across the whole of the summer will prove worthwhile. See you all again, in three years time.

This afternoon, I cleared the deck for winter. For real. All of the furniture is now stowed below, and I realize that no wind will ever move this stuff away. The largest piece (the table) cannot be lifted by one person. However, it does slide downhill, on its own. And that final flip, behind the veil of the ladder, is just a wish and a push. No need to consider the uphill trip until after our return to grass cutting season.

Until further notice, this property has been declared to be a no-fly zone. Special sticky paper has been hung in zones where traffic is unseasonably high, and certain lights will remain on (to protect innocent passersby).

I have to mention that this morning had some of the best fog I’ve seen. Nothing oppressive; this was the kind of fog that you have when clouds get tangled up with the ground. Go downhill and watch the world fade to pearly gray. I was in and out, over a period of more than an hour, and I was impressed. Of course, the sun finally came out and broke up the party.

Last evening, the temperature dropped and light flurries started. Nothing of importance, but it helped to know that I had fully winterized the RV.
