Service affected by inclement weather
And now we wait. The electricity had stuttered several times through the night, but sometime around first coffee, out it went. As the day continued, fully 70% of the Island went into enforced darkness. No water, no sanitation, no cell phones for many. Here, the generator has been purring, all day long, and I’ve sent off an email to the propane people, asking to be added to their next delivery run. Not an issue, yet, but since the utility announced that service won’t be stable until tomorrow, it is best to be proactive.
Did I mention that the generator was running? We served as a warming house for one family in the neighbourhood. Small children; were my own ever like that? My memory fails me.
Even the postal service fails, in such weather. One parcel that should have hit the doorstep this morning left the depot and then turned around. Tomorrow, if all goes well. Or Monday. Again, beyond my control and outside the service guarantee for home delivery.
And then there is the local beach. Some serious erosion under way, as I write. The images serve as a reminder that change is the constant of a shoreline.
As well, the dog stepped out, several hours ago. Hasn’t returned. We did the obvious things, like yelling his name, a lot and wandering up and down the highway with flashlights. I know from past experience (with other dogs) that this is a fruitless task. The errant soul will come home, wagging his tail, eventually. Or not. Reality check: we have no control over a wandering spirit. My realization that I could easily discover the depths of a ditch sent me back to the house where I could wait and see.
— several hours later. the dog is back, albeit cold and muddy. The electricity will come later.
