Could it be alien invaders?

posted in economy, environment |

This afternoon, I cleared the deck for winter. For real. All of the furniture is now stowed below, and I realize that no wind will ever move this stuff away. The largest piece (the table) cannot be lifted by one person. However, it does slide downhill, on its own. And that final flip, behind the veil of the ladder, is just a wish and a push. No need to consider the uphill trip until after our return to grass cutting season.

Meanwhile, as I was doing my best to put stuff away, the other half of the household headed off into the woods. With a GPS. Unfamiliar territory and unfamiliar techniques. At one point, I received a text message wondering if I could decode the parallels between onscreen squiggles and poorly mapped pathways. Mope. At the simplest level, converting DMS to D.decimal is an act of mathematics. I promised to report the coordinates to Search and Rescue, should the need arise.

In the field below, I think the aliens have arrived. Huge machines, with bewildering displays of flood lights. They seem intent on laying down a grid. I sent photos to the kids, but their theory involves agriculture. Harvesting. It’s been three years since the last time; fully long enough for a round trip to another planet. I’m going to stay with space invaders until I find an errant potato or two.

You know, that might be the most exciting thing that happened all day. I really should get out more. Or else start work on a novel set among the furrows.
