Once again, the field is empty

posted in computing, environment |

I’m impressed. Last evening, when the armada arrived in the field below us, to start harvesting in the dark, I figured on a couple of days. Nope. They went home, several hours later, with the ten acres done. I have no idea how many truckloads that represents, but I am glad for them. Farming is a gamble; this time around their efforts across the whole of the summer will prove worthwhile. See you all again, in three years time.

Around here, the subject of what makes a good GPS receiver is back on our screens. Comparisons. How much has the market evolved since our purchase (about a decade ago). In real terms, how large a screen can we get, while maintaining a form factor that will go into a backpack or a deep jacket pocket. Not ready to order yet, but that’s just an eventuality. The decision has been made.

I received a new SDR dongle this afternoon. The box was confusing; looked like a suitable way to ship a laptop battery, but that was due to the included antenna. Now to see what changes are on the update lists for various versions of software.  Imagine the hours of experimentation that lie ahead, trying to find a signal that can actually be classified and deciphered. I’m not new to the process, but the last time around, the dongles were still repurposed from TV reception in Europe. The industry now has a better target (people like me), and instead of eBay, I can turn to Amazon for access to the gadgetry. Maybe some weather satellites?
