Inspired by the Crunge

Some things take longer than expected and some just never get done. That seems to be the story of a famous highway project here in the Quebec City area, which has stretched across the lifetime of many residents without ever getting the “finished” stamp on the blueprints. In fact, we’re now into retrograde mode for one infamous section which could be known as the bridge to nowhere.

Important words, if anyone is listening

Last Saturday, Dr. David Suzuki spoke in Charlottetown. Last night, he spoke in Quebec City. Unfortunately I wasn’t in the audience for either event, but the media did present a synopsis that will have to suffice. I believe he had important words, if anyone is listening.

Santa shouldn’t wear gloves

Now that Black Friday has passed, and the full Christmas shopping season is upon us, it’s time for the visits with the store Santa. Our kids are past that happy point in all our lives, but the willing victim today was the dog. Sometimes, things just don’t follow the script.

Tired and it’s only halftime

This is a huge football weekend in Canada. Due to some kind of calendar jerrymandering, the university semifinals took place today, and Grey Cup will go to a new home sometime tomorrow evening.

Here’s a church and there’s the steeple

A long time ago, thanks to the wonderful program Shur-Gain Talent Time, hosted by the late Loman MacAulay, I learned a short hand-rhyme that went “Here’s the church, here’s the steeple, open the door and see all the people”.

Check , un deux

This week is Festival d’Été here in Quebec City with a wealth of talent showcased on a number of stages around the city centre. Admittedly, not as rich in Celtic talent as a few years back, but Dublin wasn’t built in a day. Anyhow, I’ve not been up to the “real shows” given my advanced age and requirement that I show up at work each morning; too late for beauty sleep perhaps, but the alarm still rings whether I’m sufficiently rested.

So who sets the price?

With the warm temperature at hand, the pool requires that I invest in time and materials to keep the waters limpid. Specifically, the backwash to get rid of the accumulated debris and the magic powders that need to be added, in portions that are about as roughly estimated as I can get away with.

Spring traffic jam

I had to drive son #3 to a friend’s house this afternoon. Nothing too difficult in that, except that he didn’t know where the friend lived. Check the phone book. Not listed (Dad’s a doctor). What’s his wife’s name? OK here’s a possibility. No city map to be found. Dig out the GPS and plug in the address. Off we go.

Data state

Sometimes a visit to the archives will lead to new discoveries. Today, given that the place was almost empty due to a schedule shift, I had a chance to sit down to one of the computer terminals. I found that a database of all marriages in the province during the last 80 years is available; I found myself, some of my neighbours, my old college roommate. Birthdates, marriage data, all there for the taking.
