Data state

posted in genealogy |

Sometimes a visit to the archives will lead to new discoveries. Today, given that the place was almost empty due to a schedule shift, I had a chance to sit down to one of the computer terminals. I found that a database of all marriages in the province during the last 80 years is available; I found myself, some of my neighbours, my old college roommate. Birthdates, marriage data, all there for the taking.

My wife asked the obvious question; there isn’t very much that is private anymore, is there? With all the hoopla surrounding the release of the 1911 census records, where almost all of those mentioned have “moved away from the neighbourhood” and where lobbying of our elected and appointed members of government took years to show any result, who knew? Current data was already available. There’s a dichotomy here.

And the winter carries on. While Quebec City has its usual quantities of snow, in Charlottetown the snow machines are trying to produce paltry truckloads to build a “Palace”.
