(Should I) Jump in the water?

posted in computing |

A new month, and a new round of upgrades are available for software. Internet Explorer 7 beta is out, and I have installed a copy. So far, it “seems” both esthetically pleasant and marginally slower at interpreting pages. Is it more secure?

A newer version of WordPress is now ready for the intrepid site manager. Lots of caveats about backing up your old data before spoiling the meal with the new salting of code. Will I go on? Perhaps by the weekend I’ll have the time and interest to test the update.

One thing about PHP stuff; I seem to have a gift for “breaking” an installed instance through randomly editing either code, configuration, filename or a combination thereof. My new genealogy site is down right now, because I changed a file name at 06h15, even before my first coffee of the day. No testing, no functionality. Oh well/sigh.

Hi GFP. I am enjoying a stormy day off. I notice you don’t get any comments, probably because your site is a little difficult to find!
I installed IE7 last night, but soon had to find out how to uninstall it, after discovering that most of the fancy stuff I use does not work. The Javascript magic which lets one open and close entries in the Lilina aggregator would no longer close. More inportantly, the WYSIWYG in-browser editor that I use extensively, the defunct HTMLArea 2.0, is quite broken under IE7. I use it to allow untrained users to easily update curling scores from seven clubs around the Island, and now live in fear that one will install the upgrade, which replaces IE6 altogether (there is a way to bring it back, but it is not obvious). It is possible that MS will fix these problems before the general release, but, more likely, I will have to integrate a new editor in all my websites, and find a fix for Lilina. Ah, progress!
