In a flurry of other activity, I happened to do some comparison shopping today. Online, without the guidance of a seasoned professional. It turns out that getting from “here to there” costs almost double when comparing rail to air. Of course, there’s no need to take of my sneakers, or endure cloud watching from my window, but… Did the landportation firms not get the message? They no longer have a near monopoly on warm seats in chairs.

Today, the important word in our family vocabulary is stain. Not something soiled; the other kind, the treatment for wood that is like paint but isn’t. Moving along, now. Around the foundation of the house, the constructor wizards placed a plywood sheathing to protect the ICF blocks. Eventually, those wizards intend to install a fancier layer of siding, but until then we have to protect what we have. With stain.

When you see the term “a year ago”, there’s imprecision involved. Obviously, a reference to an anniversary. But, was it date-to-date a year, or day-to-day, a year. See what I mean?

When someone likes their job, and takes it to heart, we should applaud the effort. Locally, our UPS driver has the welfare of dogs in focus, and is willing to spend years (according to him) to make friends and share that bundle of biscuits with any hairy guardian encountered along the route.

Probably on the curriculum of politician school: never admit that the other team has good ideas, until you’ve had a chance to add those ideas to your playlist. And then, never admit that the ideas came from anywhere other than your own bottomless well of common sense.

We spent the afternoon (and evening) away from home. Despite the heat; this may have broken records for the date, and it certainly felt like the kind of weather that makes going to the beach, or pitching the tent, seem like a common sense response to the world. Our rationale for leaving home was anything but seasonal.

I’ll go to sleep, this evening, with a new experience under my belt. This afternoon, I had my first contact with the whole world of construction materials manufactured from hemp fibre. Not exactly as I had imagined. Concrete is familiar. Hempcrete is similar. Chipboard is familiar. Hempboard is similar. Linen is familiar. Woven hemp fabric is similar. Is that clear enough?

A day with things to do! Almost too many things, for someone of my august age.
We decided that the local agricultural exposition wouldn’t be complete without our family in the hall. Or rink. Whatever. This fair started a long time ago; in fact, my direct ancestor arrived from Ireland just in time for the first fair, 176 years ago. If he were to teleport back, he wouldn’t be nonplussed. Let’s face it, cakes and vegetables and quilts and other demonstrable treasures from country living don’t mutate. A potato is still a potato.

Where did the day go? No, literally. The onset of darkness reminds me that summer ended back last month, and that we’re on a slide toward solstice. I did go to town, twice today. We had company. I met people I knew while in the market. Life has taken on a whole new flavour.
