Ikea wins

Make all the jokes you want. There are worse things than Ikea, when it comes to reassembled furniture. I’ve had a big job waiting for weeks; assemble a room full of Murphy bed and friends.

Making a house into a castle

Just up from “hanging” an inexpensive Venetian blind in the basement. Keeps me aware of just how cheaply made some of these products are, in order to meet that magic price point that gets stuff out the door at Wally’s place. As for the fit in the window, and the relative obscurity offered; don’t go there.

Wishbook fulfillment

A generation ago, we had the most recent catalogs, aka wishbooks, from our friends Timothy Eaton and somebody Simpson (not Homer, kids). If you had the sudden urge to shop, and enough cash on hand to afford it, you could order whatever and expect delivery soonest. Flash forward to today, when the web is all the store you really need. Whip yourself into a frenzy about the pressing need for whatever, and fill in the virtual form. Within minutes, confirmation that your order has been accepted and will be delivered soonest. Only the name changes, not the game.

Prepare to banish the darkness

Last evening, we listened to the coyotes, somewhere down at the bottom of the field. Romantic, except for the fear that our fearless dog might not fare well in an unscheduled meeting of noses. Which led to a reminder that the “magic eye” lights for outside were still packed in their original boxes, and wouldn’t it be nice if we could get them up and out where we could see what waited in the gathering gloom. Message received.

About that lawn

I admit to being intimidated by all that red clay surrounding the house. So much potential for mud. The simple cure would be to “put down” a little lawn, except that there’s a preparatory stage that will prove hard on the system. Ache in the muscles, ache in the joints.

The happy trencher

The dawning of a bright, new day at our house. We’re reconnected! Seriously, if someone had ventured that what others take as commonplace, getting a phone line, would require weeks of patient requests and interventions by others, I’d have thought my leg was being tugged. Not so.

Bin to the curb

After the wind and the rain came the sun. Life was good.

The start of the day had me wishing that the weather station was in place; a question of measurable quantities. The rain wasn’t heavy, but the weeping around the basement window provoked an illustrated epistle to the contractor’s desk. He promised to send in his fix-it team next week.

The Bell did not ring, today

Part of a proper education is the ability to quote great literature, in context. Part of life in the new corporate “dog’s breakfast” approach to customer support is the ability to misquote…

Dust be gone

Who knew that some day I’d have my own vacuum collection? Not the “beyond the earth”, lacking in air vacuum. No, more like the “too much dust around here” kind of vacuum. I’ll try to explain.

Fresh bread and water

A reminder (to self) as a new rural dweller: Don’t dress too comfortably around the house, because people drop in to visit, unlike in the big city. No scandal implied.
