In the computer industry, one way of explaining the progressive nature of things (the treadmill) is to use the term “Moore’s Law”. It isn’t a law, exactly. More an excuse to keep on spending. And for some, like me, the law has a corollary. I call it the “Recycle Principle”.

Without admitting that most of my knowledge of geopolitic comes from the various fictional novels I’ve read over the year, let me recall one such book: The Fifth Horseman, by Collins and Lapierre. Forget the storyline, as it was predictable, and focus on the villain. A certain Gaddafi. For all I knew, he was a fictional character, albeit larger than life. Today, real life surpassed the invented, and Gaddafi was killed.

I managed to grab some free GIS data this evening, along with some open source software to manipulate the bits and bytes. It doesn’t really matter that I have NO idea what to do with this stuff. Think of it as a new toy. Maybe I’ll learn something useful.
