Abbreviated job search

posted in humour |

Maybe my mindset is wrong. While reading the newspaper (online), the ad that caught my attention was for job seekers. I’m not among their number (at least, I hope not), but out of curiosity I decided to pretend that I needed my daily bread. Let’s see what I could do.

Or put another way, let’s see what I would do without being brainwashed. First up, a long distance truck driver. I’d be great with the “head on down the highway”, but something tells me that my back up into an alley to unload skills might be weak. Would they let me have the “drive through” route?

How about changing into a PL/SQL coder. After a quick lookup in the acronym finder, I was discouraged. I can ask questions… my queries leave something to be desired. That is, I’m not sure my natural questioning nature is what that employer really needs.

I could be a tester! No, after reading the prospectus, there was no mention of warm beds, cheese cake or MP3 collections. Keep on seeking.

“Naval Combat Systems Engineer (Officer)”. A chance to wear a uniform with lots of medals, and tell other people to “Blow things up!” Could be fun. No need to rise through the ranks, or do “two years before the mast”. A full pension after twenty-five more years. Wait. That would interfere with my retirement plans. I like travelling on the ferry, but military service might require a somewhat longer commitment. Sorry, Stevie.

Executive Director… of the Human Rights Commission. I like people. I have a limited slate of prejudices. I could wear a tie, if you asked me nicely. Salary commensurate with experience. That could be a problem. Remember, this is a quest for daily bread. A half-slice of none at all is still only a half-slice.
