We’re going to need bigger pipes (or is it hoses?) soon. My poor cable modem is not able to deliver the kind of bandwidth that Hollywood has decided I need. Couple that with the cap on downloaded content, before payment of penalties, and our house is just not ready for the brave new multimedia world that lies in wait. Instead, we’ll wait, as buffers fill and empty.

Another season and more of the same. The Rouge et Or from Laval University have completed another perfect season this afternoon, winning the provincial championship against Concordia in a close and well-played game. The team is off to the semi-finals next week with yet another chance to go all the way to the national championship. Good stuff.

The wait was long; at something over eight weeks I could have ordered puppies for myself and the next First Family and had delivery of the colour of my choice, complete with open eyes. Instead, the card from the postoffice allowed me to retrieve a cardboard box that was taller than the clerk who wrestled it from the back room and took my electronic signature. Home, where an evening of precise mechanical assembly awaited.

After six days in the doldrums, the breeze has returned. Oddest thing; I installed the new weather station hardware last Saturday morning, and the world around me went to calm. Until this evening, I wondered if I’d even tightened the set screw properly. Maybe the whirlygig wasn’t anything more than an ornament. Oh well, if controlling the climate was that simple, someone else would have already created a commercial system.

Finally, a scientific study that confirms what I’ve long believed. If you must keep a lawn that is attractive to the neighbours, forget the chemical pollution and the noisy lawnmower. Instead, welcome a few of man’s other best friend onto your hobby farm: keep goats.

Find your amusement where you can. Myself, in this few brief hours outside of election campaigns, I’ve turned to CBC for a retrospect on music as a force in politics. Not extensive, but enough to leave me with a few happy tears. Paris is hot!

Still too early in the evening to “make the call”, but the best local indicator we have shows that something is going on: gas is down to $0.99/litre, which means that we really can go back in time to a happier period. Maybe the US can recapture Camelot, although I hope the First Lady won’t be such a collector of expensive junk and pearl necklaces.

When you don’t know whether you should laugh or cry, follow the lead of American television, and show an evening of political satire. After all, if even one more person is scared enough to go and vote then the goal has been met. These are tense times; somebody crack another joke, please!

Mocking our politcal class has a long and coloured history. The Bible teaches it as one of the rules we should follow, and without the elected ones where would late night TV get material. If you consider Cancon, many of our finest comedic moments are obtained at the cost of political ego (a bottomless well). In fact, a whole generation has been taught that we’re better educated than our neighbours, based on the efforts of Rick Mercer to talk with Americans.

Another ordinary day for the average Joe, off from work wherever, appreciating the respite from routine that the weekend offers. At least, if your weekends haven’t become routine. How sad a thought. I started off early, busily figuring out how to place an object with multiple bolts to fasten at the top of a pole. Did you know that small metal pieces which fall into long grass tend to stay attached to the ground instead of their intended mechanical destination? Even small magnets are insufficient in the search and recover phase; off to the parts box to find a compromise.
