Discovering new fruits
Another season and more of the same. The Rouge et Or from Laval University have completed another perfect season this afternoon, winning the provincial championship against Concordia in a close and well-played game. The team is off to the semi-finals next week with yet another chance to go all the way to the national championship. Good stuff.
My local food store (should we still call them supermarkets?) has a goal of education. Each week, when you buy enough groceries (and we always do), you get some free product. Usually, the bootie comes from the fresh produce section, and usually, I know what to do with the “offering” when I get back to the kitchen. Not so, this week.
We now have three bags of pomegranates on the counter, less the two we’ve used in the discovery phase. Even after reading the illustrated instructions, we saw fit to check out Google, in case there was something secret in this whole affair. Although Punica granatum has a long and noble pedigree, I don’t see it as the food for the traveller on the go. The rich red juice stains your fingers and face, and the dozens (hundreds?) of miniberries would require a great deal of dexterity should you manage to break one open on the city bus.
Ours were rather bitter, so I added my harvest (it requires careful disassembly in a bowl of water) into a cup of yogurt; healthy food in overdrive. The taste of the aril is familiar, but only if you’ve had an early education involving a tequila sunrise or three. We’ll probably eat the rest of our gift, but I don’t see us changing our food habits that easily. Somehow, an apple is easier on the nerves.
