Harnessing a natural talent

The dog has found another place to dig a hole. Worse, she has help and a model (albeit, one with a shovel). You see, seasonal decorating has begun in the neighbourhood. Not wanting to be the only house on the block (not counting the grouchy couple several doors down, who don’t believe that such efforts have meaning in this age) to be undecorated; orange and black stuff hanging from the tree, we turned the responsibility over to the one who profits most.

Jumping to conclusions

In some ways, it is a pity that humans depend so heavily on visual clues for our socialization. The clothes we wear do “make the man” in terms of our contact with others. We live in a world that tries to convince us to alter our appearance; hair colour, clothing styles, even the shoes we wear.

If you go out in the woods today

The forest can be a dark and foreboding place, unless you go there with a friend. Be ready for surprises, throw hard and above all be careful of the hanging rope. Quite a list to work with, isn’t it. Tonight, we watched a movie that is labelled fantasy, is aimed at the youth market and may rank as one of the better pieces of cinema that I’ve seen this last while.

Setting the soundtrack for travel

Now there… I’m gone and home again, all in the same day. Made two trips through “le parc” with nary a flurry or a moose on the lam. Bus riding works.

Some home installations just don’t work, OK?

Some of the materials aimed at the home computer enthusiast need more “taming” before we accept the manufacturers’ claims that no special knowledge is necessary. Today, I happened to be involved in setting up some “consumer level” products as the friend on the other end of the telephone. I don’t think the experience is very much fun for those without the attentive buddy.

A familiar refrain will follow

It all comes down to attitude. In less than thirty minutes, the country will suspend its sense of disbelief. My studies under the eminent Dr. St. Jean called that a hypnotic trance. We will unite in front of our radios and television receivers, in a state of rapture as the next series of priorities of a New Government will be read aloud for the hard of hearing by the appointed representative of a monarch. Actually, hypnotism might be a choice, if it reduces the ache in my joints.

Finding the shorter way home

It could be that I have too much time on my hands, but as a “rider” on a large mass transit system, I like finding shorter ways from A to B. After all, time is money. Or, in transitspeak, less time spent waiting for the next bus to come along after you’ve just missed the one you need because of any of a dozen unknown reasons. Transit systems don’t have time to tell you why the bus was late. Whatever. If you know the alternatives that exist, you can sometimes find a way to get to destination on time. The joy of living with a timetable (or a few dozen).

The preparation for another season

I don’t live on a farm, and my contact with the seasons is rather detached. So much so that my markers for the oncoming of winter include such important details as a) the neighbours now have their snow sticks, b) the “abri Tempo” garages are starting to go up (fewer than in other years) and my personal favourite, c) the pool is closed.

Oh, and I hear the prince was hangin’ about the place

In spite of my birth in the city, in spite of my education at the university, I didn’t get called to supper. There, now you know that I’m feeling snubbed. No apology is necessary; I couldn’t accept one after the fact. You see, they served pork and apple pies. For a menu like that, I would have tolerated the uppity guest list.

More telltale clues of impending environmental problems

Sometimes we have to dig a little deeper to find the cause and effect relationship between certain news stories. Today, two that have my attention involve the Nobel Peace Prize and hockey sticks. The link may appear tenuous, but I believe the government may want to add this to their research plans.
