Oh, and I hear the prince was hangin’ about the place

posted in history |

In spite of my birth in the city, in spite of my education at the university, I didn’t get called to supper. There, now you know that I’m feeling snubbed. No apology is necessary; I couldn’t accept one after the fact. You see, they served pork and apple pies. For a menu like that, I would have tolerated the uppity guest list.

Charlottetown rolled out the red carpets today, in order to welcome one of the royalty. Somehow, I doubt he toured Royalty, as he was busy watching military games in the barren lands near Pisquid before heading over to the campus for a cheap degree and the chance to have supper in the Queen Charlotte Armouries. All this because “he” is named Edward.

Now, if you take the time to visit the appropriate website, in this case the Royal Family pages, you can find that there are two sons named Edward, so I hope they invited the right one. Brothers can be odd about things when they have the same name. I remember when the other one came to town by boat a quarter century ago; I did go over to the cliff edge to get some photos of this classic rowboat, but I missed the crowd scenes later that day, due to an attack of common sense. And any family that names two kids after the same province is obviously “struck” with the place, in a mirror of the way the place is “struck” with them.

Honorary degrees are funny animals. I think the custom is lovely, steeped in tradition and bit of “hope the winner leaves us a fortune”. However, UPEI might not get the largess that makes the effort worthwhile. What if they honoured the wrong kid?

Anyhow, this is a slow news weekend on the Island (and a slow blog day here) so one should forgive the topic when there are more important things going on in the world. How about those suicide bombers in Afghanistan (and the fact that they didn’t have any before the Western forces arrived in town)? Or what about our local football team that remains undefeated? As long as the pork was properly prepared, the prince (who will never be king as he is too far down the list) won’t go home with any odd stomach worms. The Island doesn’t want to be remembered for culinary faux-pas like that.
