Lessons in education

Last evening, i listened in on a dialogue about what we teach and how we evaluate progress. Some of the questions raised were valid, and I want to consider how the material we teach has direct implication on how we live.

From both ends

My day starts early enough that I sometimes catch the sun rising. Today, I left home while the light was in its first colour shifts. We had a light dusting of snow through the night and my prints were the first, from my own front doorstep, out the lane, down the road to the walkway, across and over to the bus shelter. No dogs, or rabbits, or the bicycle track that leaves me wondering how often the rider falls over on the ice.

First, change our name

Today I am going to present a hash of content that I’ve read elsewhere; a bit of “Apple sauce”. Oops, is that name trademarked? No matter, this is a fair use blog, with no commercial aspirations (although free toys are acceptable, if those with deep pockets are reading along).

Remotely useful

Another holiday season is over. The return to the office was necessary, as my personal economic model enjoys those periodic injections of capital. No money, no toys. Besides, everyone is so happy and friendly and willing to ask simple questions that it’s clear the season’s endomorphin dose has not yet sunk to those troubling December levels.

Relative value

Have you ever wished that you could just fix a problem for someone? I’m not talking about world hunger, or slavery or anything else that absorbs the various committees in think tanks. Rather, the sort of problem caused by relative value. Or, when something cost too much to allow the abandon.

Which leads to another

Once there’s a bit of wind in the sails, it’s hard to get the boat stopped. We have added the flash to our new stable of photoponies. Just yesterday, the flash was something for a future purchase, when there was some extra cash. Today, it’s here with us. Everyone needs a little more debt to keep the economy moving, I guess.

One toy leads to another

Give credit to all those companies that build and market the high-tech toys of our world. Like the commercial says, “Bet you can’t eat just one!”. If I ever had to change careers, I’d love to be the one that thinks up all the associated articles that can be added to any given device, if enough money is included in the equation.

Storage options

Today was my day off. I left the family behind and rejoined the bus army for a trip out to the university campus. Let’s be clear; although all universities are not created equal, the spirit of a campus is universal. My trajectory took me to the main library building via a stretch of black ice on black marble stones. Invisible. My magical transformation from vertical to horizontal was fit for a cartoon; thankfully I did a true “breakfall” and only my pride was injured.

Economic equality

For the casual consumer, the times are changing. Not too long ago, those in large urban centers had a real advantage in pricing for many articles. I’ve been buying photographic equipment sporadically for better than thirty years. I grew up with the belief that the best prices were to be found in the nether pages of Popular Photography magazine (meaning in the stores that have doors on Times Square). I even ordered stuff via a slow boat from China. Little empirical proof to offer; just belief.

Slower pace

Here we are, in the second week of vacation. Pretty much flat-lining. There’s a point where the novelty wears off. I’m sure that by tomorrow we’ll find something to do with the few remaining hours of leisure. Is lethargy healthy? Is it a sin?
