Oh, for an ergonomic pew

I’m home again and I’m hungry enough to be ornery. A victim of circumstance and poor retail practices; why on earth are all the fast food places shuttered, hours before midnight on a weekend? I’ll settle for that old standby, a box of chicken wings from the freezer section; 17% protein and not much else.

Brand new coins

Here in the Great White North, we have two parallel sets of currency. The first bears the likeness of a monarch (not necessarily a living person). The second, a fellow in a tam with the unlikely name of Sandy McTire. The two currencies are not mutually exclusive, because up here we sometimes have trouble sorting out our banknotes with our fingers hidden in our mittens.

My ears are wide open in the online world

My sons have turned out to be valuable resource people for my (ongoing) musical education. No sense in leaving a parent in a rut, when there is so much that they can still learn; that’s the motto.

Introduced to the Chapman Stick

We live in exciting times, musically. Access to the riches (at least those that have been recorded) is larger than life. As I get older, I recognize more references than ever before, and the whole thing approaches a deluge.

Back when the DJ kept on talking

A litany of inevitable incidents. There we are; today can be categorized. From the return of Brett Favre to Lambeau Field (dressed in Viking colours) to the reelection of the local mayor (with returns currently at 80% in his column, he has the anticipated coronation) and on to the gala for ADISQ (local music awards).

If only they can cook, just a little

I’m peeved about a thieving hound that has discovered how to feed herself. The dog is just too efficient at kitchen robbing, and it isn’t wrong (right). Rather, I’ll put it down to dissatisfaction with kibble and sufficient height to snare loaves of bread when left alone.

Simply gleeful

War is hell. So, according to popular belief, is the combined scourge of adolescence and high school. My own recollection of that long uphill climb isn’t so bad, but I’m not looking for a “do over”.

Introspection in retrospection

A moment of introspection, please. This evening, I finally sat down and watched the documentary released back at the start of the summer, with those old musical friends, the Moody Blues. For an hour, I sat in among six hundred thousand others and listened to a concert that almost was lost to history. The Isle Of Wight, in August 1970, wasn’t even on my personal radar.

Odd mirrors and old music

Somebody on the Island came close to losing their penates this afternoon, when a small fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom. The tweak in the story is how things got started – this was a case of solar energy. Seems that one of the residents had left a mirror on the bedroom vanity, and a ray of sunshine bounced back towards the window, igniting the curtains. Tricky mirror.

A cool birthday party

Here’s a great idea for a party: how about we celebrate the 90th of a great musician, and we get a bunch of other, great musicians to take care of all the details. And we can show it to a select subset via the wonders of PBS (while soliciting those necessary donations). Even better; let’s make Pete Seeger the guest of honour, so we can salute the finest of folk music from the last century. There. Done.
