A cool birthday party
Here’s a great idea for a party: how about we celebrate the 90th of a great musician, and we get a bunch of other, great musicians to take care of all the details. And we can show it to a select subset via the wonders of PBS (while soliciting those necessary donations). Even better; let’s make Pete Seeger the guest of honour, so we can salute the finest of folk music from the last century. There. Done.
As you might guess, I’m knee deep in banjo with Bela Fleck, and some party style strumming from Dave Matthews. EmmyLou Harris and Joan Baez have already graced the stage, with an elegance that can’t be matched by the current herd from Much. Selections from the songbooks of campfires, perhaps. Musically, still worth every minute. There are no one-hit wonders in this collection. Tom Morello was up, earlier (even son #3 was chagrined that we hadn’t called him up from his burrow for that one).
I hope I’m still able to get my licks in after nine decades. One more reason to practice regularly and make “living for a century” one of my goals. Earlier this evening, I happened across a Facebook group discussing teachers I’d “had” back in high school. As a whole, some very complimentary remarks. Top scores went out to my (MY) music teacher and Latin teacher, which dovetails with how I remember those days in the trenches. Two teachers that equipped me for life; I seek the tune, get into harmony and then conjugate it accordingly.
