Simply gleeful
War is hell. So, according to popular belief, is the combined scourge of adolescence and high school. My own recollection of that long uphill climb isn’t so bad, but I’m not looking for a “do over”.
That’s why I enjoy the funniest new show I’ve found on TV this fall. No matter how stereotyped the characters may be, the program still fills me with glee. That’s the name, in passing. Glee.
The trials and tribulations of a group of young artists. This program won’t be confused with Fame, not any time soon. The musical numbers are new, quirky, full of inside jokes for those who have passed the torch along. My own kids are mortified (as they watch to see what else is going to happen). I’m just glad that the networks have avoided yet another crime drama.
It’s too early to tell if this one will be renewed, but my hopes are high. There’s some great acting going on here. In particular, the female coach leaves me in stitches. Ditto for the shrinking violet teacher (who is probably very outgoing once the director yells Cut!).
I enjoy the concept of a program where the teenage characters aren’t straight out of 90210 (my favourite zip code for completing online forms). No need to pretend that the whole world lives in southern California and has a trust fund. Sometimes, kids just like to sing and throw slushies around.
The soundtrack is worth picking up, in passing. Some great mash-ups and enough dance to distract. Costumes in a time when we have too many reminders of uniforms.
