Odd mirrors and old music

posted in music, science |

Somebody on the Island came close to losing their penates this afternoon, when a small fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom. The tweak in the story is how things got started – this was a case of solar energy. Seems that one of the residents had left a mirror on the bedroom vanity, and a ray of sunshine bounced back towards the window, igniting the curtains. Tricky mirror.

Actually, it was one of those “two-sided” models, with one side boasting a slightly concave surface, the better to see the blemishes. Remember your optics class in high school, with focal points and wonderful formulae? I never learned the section about burning down the house, but tonight I’m a little wiser. Back in the drawer for the shiny things.

Elsewhere, on Youtube, I stumbled across a video of a rock band playing live at a dance. The tweak, this time around, is that the show was upstairs at the UPEI Barn, circa 1983, and I may have been there. Time to get out the freeze frame and see if I had managed to get on the dance floor. How did I look, back then? Who would have been with me? My life has so many little mysteries.

Finally, it’s time to say goodbye to summer. Yesterday, we had what some like to call “beach weather”. Today, not so much. Still, this has been one for the books, with the month of September giving us a paltry 16 mm of rain in three weeks. The neighbour was running her sprinkler the other evening, just to poke Mother Nature’s pride.
