If only they can cook, just a little

posted in music |

I’m peeved about a thieving hound that has discovered how to feed herself. The dog is just too efficient at kitchen robbing, and it isn’t wrong (right). Rather, I’ll put it down to dissatisfaction with kibble and sufficient height to snare loaves of bread when left alone.

I can remember a different sensation , as each of my children became autonomous enough to find food in the kitchen cupboard. Parents should be scared that their young could be left at “home, alone” should tragedy occur. Then, as each son hit the age where cooking is considered a lifeskill, they’ve been shown how to prepare the simple things in life. Parental responsibility, part of the educational process.

At work, I heard about a weekend camping trip with a group of teenagers, where it was sadly apparent that not all parents take their job to heart. One of the kids was given a simple task; open some cans of tomatoes for inclusion in a pasta supper. Except, the poor child had no idea how to manipulate the opener. Worse, he then proceeded to open a can, upside down. Try to picture the situation. On second though, don’t.

Last summer, I had the chance to see October Browne in concert. Not once; twice. Back home I started looking for her first recording efforts from back at the turn of the century. No longer available. But, eBay exists for just such a situation. After some research, I located a copy over in England, at a fair market price. I bid, I won, I paid my debt. Today, my package arrived via a handoff from the Royal Mail to Canada Post. Not only is the CD in mint condition, but her early work is great. I am a fan.
