The wonder of the Child ballads

I try to understand, but the whole concept fails me. How does running a bike race through the Old City translate into a two hour bus ride home, on the other side of town> Over an over again, this city score a giant FAIL when it comes to routing traffic around anything bigger than a stunned squirrel. When the QM II sailed into town, the fastest way around was on foot. When there’s a parade, traiffic is solwed, days in advance. forget anything that isn’t scheduled…

Routine jobs, instead of a routine job

One positive thing about my job is the lack of routine. Nothing “nine-to-five”, other than the requirement that I be at work for the same number of hours as indicated on the bi-weekly pay slip. That does not mean that I never have to do certain jobs that are routine.  Today, my time filler involved normalizing a database.  In computing, if your “fields” contain similar data, you can sort (more quickly). Basic stuff. And the corporate telephone data has the same warts as any other data. Save. Apply the changes. Return and repeat. All two hundred and thirteen times… A good way to kill part of the morning and most of the afternoon.

I only listened to hits

The new of the world getting you down? Can’t find solace in the music of the day. Take the alternative road, and study some history. I’ve just finished watching the last video lecture in a music history course (a combo that solves so many other problems). Retrospective on my life, with a chance to hear what I missed “the first time around”.

Which label best fits?

Time to reach out for assistance. My identity crisis has grown exponentially, following the question asked in today’s Slashdot poll: Am I a geek or a nerd? Some of you will respond with the old saw about how asking the question is answering it, but I really want to know. Checking with the definitions  on Wikipedia did not clarify matters (I know that both geeks and nerds are able to edit there). Guess I should call my family. Or, as they tell me, I should call my family…

Reincarnate me as the next Connolly

Not every performance needs to be world class. I know; some of you take deep pride in everything you produce, and only the best is good enough. I’m too old to fall into that trap. Once in a while, just getting the job done is sufficient.

A waiver and you see

Every once in a while, I get one of those Eureka moments. Nothing to do with my tent. Tonight, I’m being called by the barre. Or to the barre. I’ll have to work that out as I go along.

Record, listen, erase, repeat

Back into recording my efforts on the guitar. For public presentation, no less. Sit in a quiet bedroom, with the laptop and Audacity ready to record. Hit the round button, grab the guitar, work through the exercise, hit stop. Listen, erase, repeat until I hit the wall. You know, that place where “it isn’t going to get any better (today), so I might as well save the effort”. Five times tonight, in keeping with the five requested submissions. Upload, link to the reporting form and then get out of there. Until the next time.

Did you bring your embouchure?

I like analogies. One more way of making sense of my world. I’m not going to bore you with a list of popular ones; you can do that for yourself. But when a situation can be compared, that’s my game.

A shiny new pump

Out of bed, early, with a plan. Get the dog out from under the bed clothes and check if the bagels were still fit for anyone other than the dog. Silly… dogs don’t like bagels unless the human spreads cheese first. With that detail clear, on to other items on the list.

The rankness of the beginner

Ninety minutes of bliss. A concert slash making of documentary with Alan Doyle, wherein we learned about his recent (and first solo) effort, Boy On Bridge. I want to watch it again, right now, it was so good. The man is one of the rare ones, and he surrounds himself with some classy talent.
