Routine jobs, instead of a routine job

posted in computing, music |

One positive thing about my job is the lack of routine. Nothing “nine-to-five”, other than the requirement that I be at work for the same number of hours as indicated on the bi-weekly pay slip. That does not mean that I never have to do certain jobs that are routine.  Today, my time filler involved normalizing a database.  In computing, if your “fields” contain similar data, you can sort (more quickly). Basic stuff. And the corporate telephone data has the same warts as any other data. Save. Apply the changes. Return and repeat. All two hundred and thirteen times… A good way to kill part of the morning and most of the afternoon.

The job won’t have to be done again, before I retire.

We’re back into warm weather, and so my final action before leaving the comfort of an air-conditioned office is to unzip my pant legs. You know, so the world can see my knees.

Yesterday, I happened across an “open source” version of the Goldberg Variations. That this site even exist is a sad commentary on intellectual property rules. Bach is dead. Even more so than Elvis. His tunes have been performed by millions. I can understand that you might want to “control” your particular take or performance, but that someone had to specifically place a copy out there for the rest of us proves that corporate oversight is out of control. Thank you to those involved in the project, and please continue. There’s a lot of other, valuable music out there.
