Calculated savings

posted in economy |

This morning, following a hint on one of those sites that tries to educate the users of the world, I added a feature to my smartphone. I’m part of Team Android, which is a child of the Google. That should tell you the rest. Yes, Google does know everything. Watching my telephone location show up on a world map, just before the ringtone kicked in: proof that my world is interwoven. I know; at any point I can yank out the battery and go off the grid, but that’s not the point of the exercise. It’s all one. Like something out of a science fiction pulp novel from the last century. And I am powerless.

Trying to figure out who a recently arrived order belongs to, at work. We all are. The details of the ordering are clear, but not what set the wheels in motion. Now, we wait, to see if anyone will call with “the question”. Horrible way to run a business.

Yesterday, gasoline went on sale in the part of the world favoured by members of my extended family. $1.10 a litre. People will line up for moments like that. Photo proof, via FB. And then, son #1 added his two cents to the moment. He really is my son… he asked those who had parked in the queue to do a little math. The amount of price reduction, multiplied by the minutes wasted, expressed as an hourly wage. (Too much school). For anyone earning more than slave rates, the deal was less appealing, I guess.

Remind me not to tell him how I found a jar of something vaguely food related, on sale, by visiting three competing markets.
