End of the season

There is something about this time of year; as the local tourist attractions sign off for the season, the photos of the seasonal workers are posted. These kids (for the main part,  too young to vote) have been there, all summer long. Given their best to assure a great experience for the tourist. And themselves, leaving behind the inexperienced aura of a student and morphing into the adults that will be the workforce of the future. To all of you, thank you.

A small dose of public exposure

Today, the dog and I went for a ride  (our first ride) in the new car. Not far, but I can no longer claim that I “haven’t been a passenger”. For the record, the difference between the older and the newer came down to tiny details. At least, according to the dog.

Just a distraction

While everything seems to be going wonderfully, I now have a distraction that is going to cost me time. Not money, hopefully, but lots of head scratching thinking. You see, without warning, the main hard drive on my laptop is MIA. I’ve dealt with situations like this, many times… fixing the impossible is what I did for a living, for many years. I can handle this. The only question is about how painful it is going to be.

Reflecting on a robust history

While WordPress installed the latest version, I decided to reflect on just how long I’ve been “keeping track” of my thoughts using this software. Easy to do. I have tended to post, daily, since back in mid-2005. As the repository of all things WP tells me, I would have started with version 1.5, which today rolled over to version 5.5 with no noise.

Trying my router on its edge

Someone gave us some trendy food for supper: a “meal in a bag”, if you will. Unfortunately, not my “bag”. Knowing what will sit well in my stomach is perhaps one of my greatest accomplishments that comes from getting older. Moving along.

What about building a new pup?

Today, I learned that I could build my next dog. To be fair, I like the one I have. However, the idea that I can take a checklist, order some parts online, and end up with a “companion” has some points of interest.

Caution. Active email link.

The message seems credible: a notice from Canada Post that I’ve missed a delivery, and a link to download the related shipping documents.  H

Mid-way through a distro swap

For a few minutes, life almost got exciting here. A truck, going down the hill, with a license plate that seemed “foreign”. Could this be the tip of the tourist invasion. We sent our best scout down there, and about ten minutes later the facts were made clear. No need to call out the home guard, or find a supply of quarantine potatoes. This was just the annual visit by the flyspray team. Off to check for standing water that might host mosquitoes, come summer. Stand down the alert!

The task expands to fill the time available, apparently

The perfect storm? I know what that is. It’s when you hand a piece of technical equipment to someone who knows more than one way to get a job done, and then you watch the job consume the rest of the day, as a minimum.

Normalize a situation

Permit me to bask in the warm glow. This afternoon, I decided to “regularize” a license for a piece of software, after evaluating (in tiny increments) for an inordinately long time. I mean, seven years isn’t that long. The time flew by. It’s just that the software seems to work, every time. Now I can start things up without the shame screen. A win, all around.
