Caution. Active email link.

posted in computing |

The message seems credible: a notice from Canada Post that I’ve missed a delivery, and a link to download the related shipping documents.  H

aving spent decades dealing with such messages, there were details that distracted. A return address from a peculiar email address (office@sutyensiz.com) that had no obvious connection to the post office. Some AJAX code in the link. The niggling detail that I wasn’t awaiting any shipment that could have gone astray.

I use an email client that treats messages as text. No embedded graphics. No Pavlovian response to active triggers (yes, AJAX). Without hesitation, the message gets deleted. But I wonder how many others would get stung by whatever the “payload” contained in the active link might be. Is there nothing sacred? My email!

No matter, just another bump on a fairly smooth roadway.

The dog spent the day out in the sun. No requirement for me to open and close the door (again and again). I put my time to good use. Loads of laundry. Software updates. A meal based on the most recent bread bake. Life is good, if featureless.

I did come across one unexpected thing, this afternoon. I have a new section of coax, and it will require adding a pair of connectors. In my parts box, some brand new compression connectors for coax (PL259) that are unlike any I’ve used in past. A veritable puzzle. The first couple of videos showed me something SIMILAR to mine, but not identical; I have more parts. This is going to require additional study, before I trim any cable ends and waste what looks to be a miracle of machining.
