Just a distraction

posted in computing |

While everything seems to be going wonderfully, I now have a distraction that is going to cost me time. Not money, hopefully, but lots of head scratching thinking. You see, without warning, the main hard drive on my laptop is MIA. I’ve dealt with situations like this, many times… fixing the impossible is what I did for a living, for many years. I can handle this. The only question is about how painful it is going to be.

Yes, I have a recent backup, or three. However, on a good day, it would have required that my laptop be working, just to sort things out. There, that should clarify things.

So the question comes down to the best line of attack. I know too many paths to the top of this particular mountain. And, while I wait for my environment to become less noisy (basement construction in progress, with a mix of power tools and hammering; distracting as blue blazes), there will be no progress made on a data recovery effort.

This is Saturday, so I’ll hope for some silence, later. For now, it looks like my old laptop (with a Linux load) is going to serve as a testbed. If the main hard drive on the main laptop still spins up, I will concentrate on my personal data and then work on the rest. Hey, I can handle this!

Earlier this afternoon, I put my portable solar area, the related charge controller, a small meter and my battery pack together for the first time. In the mediocre sunlight, the system produced a measured 48 w of current (out of a potential 60 w). From what I’ve read, that is quite acceptable. It means that the idea of “free energy” is real (forget the initial financial outlay).  I look forward to long, sunny afternoons, going into the future. Everything is possible!

And while I ponder my variables, she who wants to be in a group situation is off to sail the ocean blue for several hours.
