Reflecting on a robust history

posted in computing, history |

While WordPress installed the latest version, I decided to reflect on just how long I’ve been “keeping track” of my thoughts using this software. Easy to do. I have tended to post, daily, since back in mid-2005. As the repository of all things WP tells me, I would have started with version 1.5, which today rolled over to version 5.5 with no noise.

That’s really something, given that WP is free (as in beer) and relies on a battalion of volunteers. And that’s what keeps me in the fold. I like that the development is driven without need for “pecuniary benefits”. Surely someone is paid to keep things moving forward, but as a user it is invisible. Not many other products can make that claim. For example: I admire the concept of Linux, but that did not come to pass without “blood, toil, sweat and tears” along the way.

Probably no other software package gets use on a daily basis, here. Others come close, but at the close of the day I’ll have logged in, verified the control panel, uploaded my post and moved on to something else. Only a loss of Internet can interfere. Back in the early days, especially while camping, we had to find open wifi installations to make the transfers. Now, home to stay, I can rely on some sort of signal.

What else could interfere with my satisfaction? I guess the site could be hacked, although I have managed to mitigate that risk. And I could have an attack of writers’ block, although I have managed to avoid that malady for (counting…  more than 5300 consecutive days). In large part, I owe that to the robustness of WP. And my stubborn streak.
