My take on winter is that you have to have a few traditions. Apart from piling and re-piling accumulated precipitation. Or avoiding near occasions of frostbite.

Today, in a break with my usual pattern, I actually went outside and moved snow around for something to do. The new accumulation of about 40 cm needed talented intervention (or a mechanical plow); I simply provided my lifetime of experienced technique. How long until spring, already?

My first real computer qualifies as a classic. A true antique. Almost steam punk. And so, today, as part of the decision tree, I lugged it upstairs and plugged it in. Wiggled the wires, a bit. Did a “warm boot”, a couple of times. And booted, from a diskette.

If winter arrives, I will put the boots to it. Really! Under dark, rainy skies, I sallied forth this morning and chose the footwear that will get me through the next round of Canadian fun. Limit the “slippin’ ‘n slidin'”‘ and go with gripping, not gliding. Real knobby soles, and laces. Side zippers seem so practical until that eventual morning when they aren’t.

The firefighters are still stirring the stew, so it remains too early to say/know how much damage occurred. As the newscaster understated, “buildings can be restored”.

Certain anniversaries almost pass unnoticed. The newscast, this evening brought one to mind. Just over thirty years ago, I almost “got blowed up, real good”. Saved by eating breakfast. Long story, rendered caduque by the passage of time. It involved the Pope, as a plus.

There. Another of my work problems has been fixed. The school with no telephone service (for ten days) received an unadvertised visit from a phone guy either Friday or this morning. Now the phone system rings through. I am impressed. Or not.

Part of the job description for parents, once past that initial nurturing phase is teaching. Or, as those in the cheap seats refer to it, lecturing. Giving advice, in firehouse quantities.
