Less time means a compromise

Over coffee, this morning, I decided to check the calendar. I quickly realized that an early morning appointment, tomorrow, meant getting to our next destination, today. And so we bookmarked our itinerary and headed west.

A long way to that light

We made a quick stop at the nearby beach halt, this morning. Waves and surf… and surfers. For me the first time ever seeing people swim fearlessly out into a raging white sea, and the return in an upright position. Not movie weather, but the real thing right in front us.

An error in my packing

While packing to travel, I had a moment of distraction. Rather than donning my jacket, I hung it on a chair while making the final preparations on a letter I intend(ed) to mail. I placed the letter, carefully, into a pocket. And then I went off to do something else. Lock the doors, possibly.

First instance of cutting shore power

I spent most of the morning awaiting permission to “cut shore power”. No, I’m not afloat. That’s just RV lingo for unplugging the fat gray extension cord before setting off to see the world, one small step at a time. We didn’t pull onto the highway until after noon, but the preparation meant that meals were “for a future moment”.

Time to test

Without making this sound too much like a test for a trip to the great beyond, we were due for our first test voyage. After all, the rig has passed the home trials without issue (a fuse is not an issue, OK?) Today, we decided  to go to the end of the driveway, turn right and see how things went.

We could jail the dog

I think I have figured out the puzzle about wildlife migrating into new places; they don’t follow people rules. Over supper (fries with the works, for the first time in about a decade), we started “what if” brainstorming. What if we went to Newfoundland? Did it before, had a great time, bla-bla-bla.

In the land of the preemptive lawsuit

Got your cray-cray cap on? Well, someone in Las Vegas certainly does. The owner of the hotel where a mass shooting took place in October 2017 has launched lawsuits against the survivors of the tragedy. Some of them. If a person doesn’t already have a case file open against the hotel, this is being done as a preemptive attack. Or as one spokesperson put it succinctly: “the most outrageous thing I have ever seen”. Have to agree.

Classic tactile education

Forget the classroom, for a bit. Right now, I’m learning (a lot), and the process is entirely tactile. There’s a new “rig” in the yard, and since the suitcase of manuals only seems to bear passing similarity to all of the bells and whistles, the two proud adults are reduced to pushing buttons. As long as we don’t hear a loud siren, along with a canned voice announcing “total destruction in sixty seconds”, we are probably going to get along fine.

Great personal mobility

I happened upon an editorial this afternoon (part of my quest to read everything) which pointed out something very important. There is no longer enough time in a day to keep up with the flood of new media. Here, I refer to movies, books, television… impossible to absorb all of it. The article went on to recommend adopting a strategy of selectivity. It doesn’t matter that you

Winter by rail

Why would I travel by train? Why not? I’m not anticipating any time on the rails in the short future, but an article I found this afternoon reminded me of my past adventures. First of all, a link, so you can get a feel for winter in Canada.
