We didn’t hesitate, this morning. Certain campgrounds are equipped with negative karma; this one had a whole booklet to list their rules. I didn’t infringe on their desire to have social control. Come morning, after a coffee, we pulled our plug and got set for the great metropolitan avoidance.

Keeping with our trend of avoiding “a plan”, we le the road dictate today’s route. We could have visited the Navy’s submarine exhibits, but instead we went to one of those trendy market villages; the better to shop for Xmas decorations and kitchen gadgets.

Although home is still over the horizon, today marks our criss-cross of the continent. Out, from the Maritimes to the Wet Coast, then south to Oregon (where I dipped a toe, symbolically) and back east to here. That is, on the coast in Connecticut. As early as this morning, we had planned another water fall, but our plans evolved during the day. I’ll get back to that.

Almost fifty years ago, some decent musicians and a lot of observers got together in a big field in upstate New York. The place name we all remember is Woodstock, although it actually was near Bethel (about an hour away). Unsure why the confusion; maybe the posters had been printed before the field was available. I’ll check (later).

Using a spreadsheet to track travel trends; now I can be sure of patterns. We now know, through careful analysis, that this is the twelfth place we have stayed for two nights or more. In simpler terms, our crossing the continent and back could have been done mire expeditiously, but we wouldn’t have the same memories.

No more chances on the dog continuing to explore the local community. In passing, he’s showing the same level of stiff joints that I might, if I jumped out the window and toured the streets. Someone posted a map, on Reddit, showing his route based on community-based sightings.

While out with the dog, early, my mind was made up. A lovely little river, a vineyard next door, no other RV parked alongside… worth our putting down roots for a second night.

For years, the word Chautauqua was tucked into one of those seldom opened drawers in memory. I think it came through learning about Leacock, or maybe it had to do with one of the plays at the Confed Centre. No matter. Today, I sat down to supper in a small restaurant on the shore of Lake Chautauqua, and I have a better idea; it has to do with the world of summer, and boats, and band concerts in gazebos. At least, I think so. No matter.

With a longer wheelbase, we try to avoid inner-city driving. Nevertheless, we set out this morning to get to the city limits of Pittsburgh, which has a population of about over two million, once you factor in the suburbs. Given that this is rugged ground, no way of telling where you are by simply looking out the window. As we approached the area, leaving Ohio and entering West Virginia, we were surprised; our target was Pennsylvania, and we didn’t realize that the state lines were convoluted.

Seeing how something is made, in the mechanical world, can be very educational. Plus, when you don’t have to disassemble something valuable (of your own, on your own), it can be the highlight of a vacation day. This afternoon, after following two pages of carefully printed instructions from the clerk at the campsite, we landed in Jackson Center, OH.
