How to make those around me worry: Easy. Voluntarily make a spinach salad for supper. In a world of meat and potatoes, that is just odd, but I did it. Now, does that mean that I can go heavily into junk food, tomorrow? It is SuperBowl Sunday. If I can source a box of spicy wings, and some decent chips for the couch container, I could restore dietary equilibrium. We’ll see how tomorrow unfolds.

I am convinced; my local grocery store is “just the right size”. Now, without trying to vary my diet by too much, the process of getting there, in, out and home again is relaxing. Here, let me break the process down.

Two things that have always been there: food and music. Now, my needs have varied, over the decades, but I’m fortunate. I’ve never had a long stretch with food I didn’t like, and the music has always come back around to something I appreciate.

We started the new off in a different manner; the neighbours came to supper. They had to supply part of the menu and the cooking knowhow, but we managed to seat a mixed group of six, and to have everyone leave the table satisfied. No desserts were involved.

Another round of retail madness, without me. The idea of visiting places such as Costco do not interest me, when a big coat and big boots mean I have to anticipate the aisles. Instead, I stayed with the nephew-in-law and progeny, and the afternoon just went away.

The last moments of poorly controlled retail before the holidays, and I handled it it in a proper fashion: total avoidance. It would have been easy to join the mall crawl; it was easier to remain the the relative comfort of our temporary quarters, along with the dog. Did I miss out? Doubtful.

Less than two weeks until the solstice. Getting up at an early hour (yes, seven in the morning qualifies) I can only take note that it is very dark outside. By suppertime (yes, five in the evening also qualifies) I can also take note that it is very dark outside. Do you see a pattern here? Assuming that you have access to artificial lighting, of course. The day doesn’t last long enough. Fast forward, please.

It is very dark outside. I haven’t turned on the lights, because there are people about. At least, I hope they’re people. A car came in the yard, earlier, stopped, waited, left again. No lights; works every time.

Recently, one of my kids wished for a donair recipe. Of course, I was able to provide the reference material necessary to the cause, even if I didn’t want to make a batch for me. Too much spicy meat, etc. And when a mysterious package of “donair meat” appeared in my own refrigerator, I had to find other work-arounds (lacked some basic ingredients).

Until now, I had never considered the jelly bean as a commodity item. I see them, I buy them, I eat them. The price point is a detail. In fact, for several years, I lived with a free jelly bean bowl, as part of the perks of office life. Doesn’t exactly lead to an appreciation of the value, when “all you can carry in your pocket” is the measure.
