Substitute until satisfied
Recently, one of my kids wished for a donair recipe. Of course, I was able to provide the reference material necessary to the cause, even if I didn’t want to make a batch for me. Too much spicy meat, etc. And when a mysterious package of “donair meat” appeared in my own refrigerator, I had to find other work-arounds (lacked some basic ingredients).
Here you are; lunch on a work week. I used a round of pita bread, lightly moistened, as the base. After spreading a lot of donair slices (think bologna, with attitude) in a small frying pan, I simply laid the bread on top, turned up the heat and waited. The meat contains enough fat that no butter was necessary, and the whole thing took a few minutes to go from fridge to table.
As I said, I lacked a few essentials. Vegetables, for the main part. No tomatoes or onions on hand. But, there was a jar of salsa, so I considered that to be a suitable substitute. Layered on a plate, with a few drops of magical donair sauce (my fridge has many wonders), I rolled it up and treated it as a success. The salsa was spicy (ditto for the meat) and the sauce gave the required offset. I’ll probably do the same thing, tomorrow; not to get into a rut, but to avoid throwing away perfectly acceptable foodstuffs.
So, kids, if you are paying attention: you, too, can regale yourself, with a few alternative ingredients. There has to be bologna in your local coldcut display. If you are able to slice and dice a few tomatoes and onions, go for it. Else, salsa serves.
