Another sleepless night. I know that I did hear the cuckoo, several times. In between, my brain played through the various ways I could attach PVC piping and small metal rods together, allowing me to mount a new (and yet to be procured) antenna to the side of the house. Somewhere along the way, my recollection of what was already in place proved faulty. When I wandered over there, this afternoon, I realized that engineering done in the fog of insomnia is hardly practical. In the real world, I don’t think they encourage such effort.

This is the week where millions read long chapters of scripture; the historical (sic) sections, rather than the contemplative. I know, I’ve been there. Anyhow, one reference always left me wondering. That bit about the refreshing beverage, also known as vinegar. I’ve tasted vinegar (on my fries, thank you). Not exactly thirst-quenching. But, let me continue.

How long have the classrooms been empty? Well, long enough to drive the educators into the hands of the mad video producers. I had seen the static displays from my old school board. Here, we’ve upped the ante. From the school principal, in the big city, with his kids giving everybody a friendly wave, all the way to our nearest high school where the staff offered up dance videos to a singular background beat. Touching, if odd. Were we to reopen the doors tomorrow, there might be some red faces. Nothing to do with springtime sunburn…

Staying home and enjoying life; a fresh loaf of bread has powers that go far beyond the minimal ingredient list in the recipe. Seriously. Between fresh bread and a good steak, I’m unsure which would win. Hey, why not both? Since the BBQ is still on hiatus (and I have no steak in the fridge), today is a bread day.

The people at National Geographic saved me from a lot of personal effort in a recent article. Imagine, if I had been required to purchase a bell, hang that around the neck of a house cat and then take the time to follow the beast. Wouldn’t happen. Instead, over nine hundred cats were equipped with GPS trackers. And then, in a feat of scientific discovery, the cats were allowed to wander while their explorations were recorded.

To be scientific, an experiment has to be repeatable. At least, that’s what my high school teacher told us. And to ensure that aspect, the experiment should be recorded. I guess I finally have a reason for those lab reports we produced, without understanding the rationale. I’m older now.

While reading history (fact or fiction, combined), I have often taken note of the diet. Specifically, the ration of bread, which seemed to satisfy soldier and criminal alike. Did it really? Satisfy, I mean. Today, I tried my own test, relying on that last batch of bread for a full pair of meals. Now, the quality is surely part of the equation; they would have killed for something as “light and white and tasty”. I’ll know better, several hours hence, but for the moment I’m satiated. For those of you who exclaim “But it’s not a balanced diet”, I disagree. Grains, dairy, that egg I threw into the machine just for the fun of it; all came together in a manner that makes me want to repeat the plan before I forget my details.

Tonight, in a complete change of speed, we went out to dine. Real restaurant food. No assembly line burgers; I had a wonderful potato-bacon soup followed by a fancy bit of chicken that had met a lobster on the way by. Try it; better than it sounds. I didn’t have my usual chair, and the lighting was subtle (no glow from a laptop screen). But, I enjoyed the meal. And now I’m home for some late evening spectator time (yes, curling).
