A refreshing pause

posted in food, ham radio |

This is the week where millions read long chapters of scripture; the historical (sic) sections, rather than the contemplative. I know, I’ve been there. Anyhow, one reference always left me wondering. That bit about the refreshing beverage, also known as vinegar. I’ve tasted vinegar (on my fries, thank you). Not exactly thirst-quenching. But, let me continue.

I’m including a link to an article about the predecessor to Gatorade. Soldiers in “those times” would get thirsty, and water wasn’t always available, or clean. Given the abundance of wine (gone sour), soldiers would mix bitter wine and water and some spices, creating their own version. Don’t confuse this with hyssop.

And so there you have it. Now, I have developed a taste for fizzy water. Once in a while, I’ll add a small amount of lemon juice. I guess it’s time to find a small flask of wine vinegar, and try an “old fashioned”. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I’m back to reading spec sheets for transceivers. Fits in well with unlimited time and very limited resources. My quest is to discover the best bang for my buck, should I decide to play in the VHF/UHF frequencies. Lots of numbers! The actual product reviews leave me wary (and weary), because there  isn’t an ideal answer. I don’t live in an area with lots of repeaters and traffic. This would be more an invitation to experiment with antennas, to see if I can make the haul across the water. Remember, lots of time, little money. It will flavor the outcome.
