Weighty possibility

posted in economy |

Starting this week, the federal government is opening the money faucets. Any one in need of assistance due to loss of wages brought on by the pandemic can apply. And so, I thought about this for a few minutes.

Of course, any government largesse is means tested. Simply applying on the website isn’t enough. I wondered if my straits were dire enough to send me into the twisty passages (see what I did there, you who are of a similar age?). And, within minutes, I stopped. I know I’m not the target audience. But, you can be sure there are many who only see the lucrative part of the message.

Already, social media has started to carry the calculations: should I quit my day job and go on the dole?  This is not a new interpretation of social income. For decades, the factory owner class has complained about the difficulty of finding workers when “they” have to compete with an optimized income stream.

I can assure you that very few give up a regular, satisfactory income in order to receive direct deposits from Ottawa. Despite the humorous films, pogie (and its cousins) are not a way to get rich… quickly or otherwise. Right now, people are hurting financially, and the promise of “two thousand a month” with strings attached is not a replacement for regular work. It’s an attempt to avoid bread lines.

As the forecasts of a summer at home start to come out, many employed seasonally are realizing that we’re in for some tough times. Best to get the debt load down and develop sane dietary rules.
