Proactive activities

The dog may not realize this, but I am proactive on his behalf. Not to be caught with my head buried in the sand, or worse, with the head of a tick buried in his flank, I bought him a brand new flea and tick collar for the upcoming season. Why, one announcement claimed that the wee buggers are active once the temperatures get up above 4C. Today we barely scratched thaw levels, but it’s just a matter of time. We are now prepared.

Rare vegetables

Unsure if it was by design or coincidence, but when we headed to the city this afternoon, I remembered to slip that retired iPhone into my pocket. After a quick visit to the Bell kiosk, where they keep things like orphan SIM cards around, the factory reset I started months ago is finally complete. Hurrah! Another gadget to try and charge before use. Oh, and there is no intention to “phone” with the phone; this will probably be tethered to a MIDI device for convenience.

Aggressive pricing returns

One of the largest fast food chains is tired of the eroding customer base. Today, the announcement vaunted a return to chicken nuggets without preservatives and more aggressive pricing. Great! I didn’t want to keep my take-out indefinitely. And I am eagerly awaiting the $0.28 hamburgers.

Back to the fork

In my younger days, I owned a tuning fork. Used a tuning fork. Knew about that sweet spot on my mastoid, allowing “natural amplification” while trying to coax a set of recalitrant timpani up to pitch during a long rest. Oh, the skills we needed. When it came time to move to other instruments, I learned that my violin could be brought into tune by use of the fork (and harmonics). Felt good, too.

Got fooled, rather than got milk

It’s true. I still enjoy a tall glass of cold milk. Seems to mystify the waitstaff in certain restaurants. Refreshes in a way that cola cannot. And today, I “got fooled” rather than “got milk”.

The borrowed time model

I’m now “living on borrowed time’. That big bag of coffee beans is empty. The remainder is in one of those ordinary sacks in the refrigerator, while the shipment from our dealer doesn’t ship until Monday (followed by whatever games the postal system will play, in their attempt to break said beans). Will we run out? Maybe.

The physics of drifting snow

Despite having a lot of available time, I’ve made a decision. I’m not going to learn “latte art”. The realization that I prefer my coffee black has a lot to do with it, and also the metaphor about painting a cloud. The crema is ephemeral. However, I would like to up my “knock box” skills.

Only The Kevin would pretend to “go postal”

When the evening news showed someone burst firing an automatic rifle, I assumed the coverage had turned to one of the umpteen war zones around the world. Then, the shooter pulled off his ear protectors and goggles; there was The Kevin. At a shooting range in the deep South. You can’t make this stuff up; one of the pretenders to the throne of Canada, being a “good old boy”, and tweeting about the fun.

Roasting will be better, for sure

“You’re fired!” was the punch line in his previous job. After all, he was running a reality TV show, where he played the merciless boss. Now he has a new job title, but the skills from his last gig have already come in handy. Last night, the president fired the attorney general (acting) as well as the person responsible for immigration policies. After all, in the private sector, one doesn’t agree with the boss and get away with it. Why would high-level public service be any different?

A long way from the county line

Spent the last couple of hours taking care of a small roast of beef. Smells good, but I’ve decided to up my game for the next time. I went on Amazon and ordered one of those seven-position roaster racks.
