Got fooled, rather than got milk

posted in food |

It’s true. I still enjoy a tall glass of cold milk. Seems to mystify the waitstaff in certain restaurants. Refreshes in a way that cola cannot. And today, I “got fooled” rather than “got milk”.

Being colour blind is rarely a handicap for me. I know my limitations. And when I buy milk, I know (instinctively) where to look in the dairy counter. Being brand agnostic, I tend to alternate between two local dairies; one with a blue cover, the other with orange. And so, this afternoon, I pulled a new two litre jug from our refrigerator, unscrewed the cover and poured. The first mouthful brought me up short.

My father told me, years ago, that it was an acquired taste. Buttermilk, I mean. I had failed to double check the fine print. My wife tells me that the cover in question (today) was actually golden. I missed that nuance. From now on, I may be a “blue” client, just because. And as for the buttermilk, it’s gone. Down the drain. I’m too lazy to look for recipes that feature such a surprising flavour.

I’m now caught in a different difficulty. We have travel plans, for later this week. I had planned to finish off the perishables from the refrigerator. Now, I may just forego any further dairy buys until we get back. That cola I disdained earlier will now have to serve as my goto. And don’t get started on the dangers inherent in sugar. I’m too old to care (or read the label).
