The borrowed time model

posted in food, humour |

I’m now “living on borrowed time’. That big bag of coffee beans is empty. The remainder is in one of those ordinary sacks in the refrigerator, while the shipment from our dealer doesn’t ship until Monday (followed by whatever games the postal system will play, in their attempt to break said beans). Will we run out? Maybe.

I know; on the bigger scale of life, a shortage of coffee would be minor. But, this is my life, and my new espresso machine is wonderful.

Went to a community meeting this afternoon. No, nothing about taxes or zoning changes; this was a call for information on local history and genealogy. Matters that are important (albeit not on the same scale as freshly ground beans). I learned that there are others with a share interest (mania?) and that commercial sites such as Ancestry make research for newcomers to the field into something almost trivial. “Follow the leaf”. I watched as an older gentleman was shown the first five generations upstream from his father, in a matter of minutes.

When you have lots of time, the old ways work, in family tree research. When you are, literally “living on borrowed time”, as you approach that century mark, turning to the “sellers in the Temple” can be a good return on investment. I’m still torn; would I give up the countless hours of fun “about the whole family” in return for a fistful of dollars? Anyone want to bankroll me? I can do lookups for you at the same time.
