Training for the trains, etc.

At some point, I may have to get into a comfortable position and watch a lot of old movies. Specifically, something about Star Wars. Yes, I am aware of the basic premise, but due to my exiting the world of popular culture for a very long time, I haven’t seen all the movies. Haven’t really seen any of them, actually.

Prime binges

Deep inside, I know the action is wrong. However, we seem to have a subscription to Amazon Prime, and suddenly TV just improved. The choice, I mean. We watched two seasons (all there is) of the latest iteration of The Tick, in a couple of evenings, and now I want more.

A long view of a lifetime

Part of my rationale for posting regularly is memory enhancement. We all try to keep track of the bigger moments, but the day to day, the mundane moments… they get lost in the proverbial shuffle.

Farewell to the shelves of yore

For close to three decades, I took pride in my small but growing library. Went beyond the random piles on the floor and invested in some real shelving. At the end, I counted somewhere close to one hundred linear feet, attached to the walls and spaced according to my needs.

Are you ready? Yes, I am

Interesting day in Canadian sports coverage. At long last, the person most likely to make crappy comments has been relieved of his duties. He finally said too much, and when the broadcasting council complaint server went into overload, somebody finally reacted. No more loud plaid jackets to distract the common man while the rant takes place.

(More than) 57 channels (and nothing on).

Another important university football weekend, where my only access to the game that interested me was via Twitter. Hardly the same as being there, or watching it on a big screen TV. I tried. Even with all those channels that are listed on my sat box, the only game available (in the Canadian context) was the university championship from central Ontario.

Tagging in a mobile gallery

Last night, I could have joined the nation and watched the televised political debate. I didn’t. Actually, I think I was part of the majority. Did what was second best: listened to the after-debate review, on CBC. As they say, I “dodged a bullet”. Poor format, too many voices, a mess of “stingers” and scripted talking points all led to the conclusion that there was no winner. So much for clarifying muddy waters.

An experienced rewatch

Our time on the road, last spring, gave me a whole new set of experiences to draw from. That’s why, re-watching the movie The Leisure Seeker, I had so much better an understanding of some of the situations the couple found themselves in. Not the exact situations; more of a sense about what life on the road is like. I enjoyed the movie more, this second time through.

No anticipation required

Now that was a trailer! The new Downton Abbey movie has me anxiously waiting for the opening credits, even if there isn’t a chance that I’ll be in a cinema seat, two weeks hence. I want to see the movie; I don’t want to share the experience with hundreds of strangers (or acquaintances). There has to be a better way than this public release. How about, for example, on TV? I have surround sound, and the screen on my living room wall is new and still shiny.

Our local beach movie

My next move: read some basic antenna theory. Today, I received a small package containing some ferrite coils. As well, a larger package containing a kit, to construct and experiment with mag loop antennas.  I will have to find some hardware to actually get busy, but that’s just a matter of choices from Amazon. This should begin as soon as the summer rush ends.
