Hot, wet and windy

Too much rain. Too much  wind. Too warm. Heading home from a day with 60 mm of  newly deposited water, blown about by breezes reaching 90 kph, and a thermometer that maxed out at 18C; not exactly traditional fare for November. But, enough about the weather.

Streamlining the pastry list

As the dog does wind sprints in the living room, complete with over-table leaps and tight corner turns, I realize that he is more athletic than me. More than I’ve ever been, including one summer in high school, Guess that goes under the heading “the nature of the beast”.

Blame it on the stealthy bus

My vindication was short-lived, By suppertime this evening, over  half the box of peaches had dissolved into compost. Less than 24 hours. How do they do that (the fruit sellers), and do they think I’ll get fooled again? Back to canned and drowned in syrup, I guess.

The lonely pool

A distinct odor of burning wood coming in from outside. Considering the possibilities, I hope to hear about distant forest fires.

Under no obligation to share

Rarely have I felt so important. Or watched. Trying to cook and eat a good steak while under the supervision of two dogs; every move 9on my part) weighed and commented on (by them). A small dog can implore.

Canine social media

By the time I had boiled my water on the ever so useful campstove, for a second time since sunrise, the dog wanted my attention. Prepare my coffee, but while things cooled down, we should leash our collective spirit and go for a wander. Up the lane to the campground, where every other dog has already gone. You can see where this is actually going.

Mental stimulation while eating

Today the dog got shot. Shots. Punctuation is important, especially when discussing punctures. Relax; the morning ride was for nothing more serious than an effort to give the dog a dose of rabies. Pardon; a vaccine against rabies. The details are important. Visits to the vet are stressful, because dogs don’t always have pleasant memories. In the case of the older lady, with the cardboard box that once held cookwares, she won’t have them either. A final solution, for her old (very old) cat. In fact, the vet probably does more good than harm,  but the client won’t give two thumbs (paws) up on the idea.

Alternate fishing

For several hours, I’ve been watching other people fishing. For catfish. Not a species I think much about, usually. Wait… not real catfish. The other kind. I’ll explain.

Trying to judge the suitable level of effort

How much effort should I put into reviving an old computer? Some hardware doesn’t stop working prematurely, and a machine can still do the jobs it did in [fill  in the year] today, as long as the software is still available. I’ve got a few “veterans” around the house, much to the chagrin of others. Now to justify the storage space and effort. This afternoon, I plugged in an old Mac, but the install disk I have on hand won’t work with this machine. I’m sure I can still purchase a solution, but the box works fine in Linux. Do I really need an apple as a working solution, when there are Windows and Linux boxes to take up the workload? Is this an “intellectual” exercise?

Awaiting a retail solution

Used to be, I wondered why a 24-hour grocery store would be a good idea. Never had an urge to stock up on canned goods at 3 a.m.; by extension, neither did anyone else. And then, this morning, unable to provide coffee to others due to a shortage of dairy products (cheese doesn’t count as a substitute), I found myself sitting in the parking lot, in a howling rainstorm, waiting for the doors to open (under their own power, given the winds). Too early by twenty minutes, and too stubborn to go to another store. At least I had radio, although CBC early is still CBC.
