Is honest politician an oxymoron?

I’ll try to avoid remarks about “what goes around comes around”, although isn’t it odd that the ash plume from Iceland has spiraled back from Europe towards airports in Newfoundland. No, this is more about “throwing stones when you live in a glass house”, and it involves our latest attempt at political scandal.

Thoughtful words from the Rexman

One of the small pleasures offered up each Sunday is Cross Country Checkup. Rex Murphy does an admirable job of keeping the wild ponies (callers) corralled.

Put up or shut up, sayeth the minister

Finally, the gloves are off. After months of accusatory rhetoric from a former cabinet minister, the premier has told him to “put up or shut up”. In parliamentary terms, that’s raw.

The right hand knows not what the left hand is doing

Apparently, one sign of extreme obesity is that the individual cannot see personal appendages (where did the toes go?) I think that our provincial government may have a problem.

Big Mike dodged the big bullet

Irrational behavior – could living on a fault line be used as an explanation? Given the silly episode of Idol that just finished, I’m seeking some reason.

Reading the CV with a loupe

The place where silly ideas end up

Ask kids; school isn’t the most exciting place to spend the day. Apart from the uncomfortable chairs, the industrial lighting, the water fountains that never seem to jet properly, there’s the elephant in the room. Curriculum. That section was overlooked

Somewhere along the road, our current government has taken a fork, or a right turn, or maybe they are caught in their own version of a deep rut. Although the people of Canada, the supposed employers of a government, have a certain historic and cultural baggage, we’re now at the point where ministers of the Crown are able to project their personal beliefs on the workings of the state.

Let the Games begin, if they must

Three little words: Citius, Altius, Fortius

For public purposes, an invitation to play nicely with others. In private, an admonition that only superlatives matter. Once again, the Games are upon us. Seventeen days; enough time for spring to fully arrive on the Left Coast. I’m watching the Opening Ceremony. Have been for hours. It takes a long time to welcome all the neighbours over for a play date.
