Big Mike dodged the big bullet

posted in Idol, politics |

Irrational behavior – could living on a fault line be used as an explanation? Given the silly episode of Idol that just finished, I’m seeking some reason.

Here we are, with nine aspirants to the crown. Nine, all talented; not equal, but each with that special something that has kept their candidature alive. Now, I’m not a tin hat theorist, but we’re told that people vote (anonymously) by telephone or by net vote. I’ve tried; never managed to deposit a single marker. At the end of each week, after great effort by Ryan Seacrest to keep us “sitting on the edge”, we’re told that someone is in the bottom. We’re never told actual tallies. Hence my skepticism.

Tonight, big Mike Lynche became the anointed – to leave. Take the best talent and declare that America has voted to remove the possibility of winning. Unless (and here we head into Ouija territory) the judges that their one and only “save” to keep a candidate in the running. Tonight, big Mike Lynche dodged the big bullet.

To put this in simple terms, we’re to believe that the best of the bunch suddenly became the worst, but was saved for another week by an extraordinary intervention.

I don’t buy it. Methinks we’re into manipulation of audience numbers. Not that I’ll stop watching Idol, but could we keep things in the range of plausible situations. Next week, when two are sent home, take the weak and mundane. Leave Big Mike alone (on the road to a win).

In other news, the president of Afghanistan is thinking about resigning and joining the Taliban. Or so we’re told. That old audience manipulation thing?
