Eventually my books will virtualize

posted in computing |

Pretty sight this morning, with a few hundred snow geese busily refueling in the bay. We see these transients twice a year, coming and going. Rarely in flight, and never during the full daylight, but one more sign that a season is changing. My pool should be out of ice over the weekend, and we’ve seen ducks in there (once). Oh, and the tires are now “changed”.

Another web review of an ebook reader, and i’m still not willing to drop virtual money to read virtual books. Don’t get me wrong; I think that this will be the wave of the future. However, like the earliest automobiles, we’re going to endure eccentric details until the Model T comes along. At that point, I’ll be ready. I mean, when “they” finally launch the product of my dreams, I’ll be able to stop carrying a bagful of novels. That’s my “just in case” plan, should the bus get stuck in traffic.

Of course, the iPad is out, and although it’s strong on flash (and can’t handle Flash), I don’t need one. If Apple called and offered to have me test the suitability for the urban commuter, I’d put on my best game face and take one for the Gipper; my number IS listed. Here’s the risk with a non-multitasking tool: I’d still have to carry a MP3 device and an (eventual) ebook reader, plus a telephone (little chance of that). A whole pack of devices to compensate for the lack of multitasking.

Today I learned that enabling a PDF for comments requires contortion skills. I’ve shown others the concept, and now I’ll have to support the users at the other end of the table. Can’t win.
