Is honest politician an oxymoron?

posted in politics |

I’ll try to avoid remarks about “what goes around comes around”, although isn’t it odd that the ash plume from Iceland has spiraled back from Europe towards airports in Newfoundland. No, this is more about “throwing stones when you live in a glass house”, and it involves our latest attempt at political scandal.

Locally, the premier is under fire from a former cabinet minister who would be mayor (if only he could). Scathing remarks about the under the table methods of financing, influence peddling, yada-yada-yada. Oddly enough, it is now alleged that the same man who would besmudge the reputation of all and sundry ALSO used what the papers call “prête-noms”. That is; a mechanism for hiding oversized contributions in the political context.

Funny how those of the political stripe are able to see the grain in the eye of another, while missing the beam in their own. Bibilical, eh what?

On another tilt, what’s with this determination of the current federal government to sink the long gun registry? Even when the police chiefs of the country say that it serves a purpose, our men in the uncomfortable chairs seem determined to ignore sane advice and continue on the same broken record refrain we’ve been hearing for a decade or more. Get over it. You own a gun, you register it. Works for cars, boats, planes: why not speeding bullets? Ask Superman.

Reports cards are out, sayeth the minister of education. She can’t understand them, so how could anyone else?

Some days, you can’t find a decent politician. Or a wanna-be. Or anything else rational.
