Don’t jump to conclusions

I really shouldn’t watch the evening news. All too often, I’m left wondering who “forgot their meds”. Seriously. A bit like something out of a lurid graphic novel, if we take today as an example.

Getting not involved

During one of flash visits from one of the kids (for a bit of fridge fodder and a chance to bring me up to date on life in the outside world), he threw out the kind of question that requires more time than most of us have available.

Referendum anticipation

True story. Two guys are in queue at a local burger joint. Make it all the way to the counter, when their register closes, leaving one other open. The one with a newly formed queue of a school bus load of hungry farm workers.

Too close for (my) comfort

Time to vent a little. I am greedy when it comes to personal space. Public transit is forced but acceptable; a balance of time and price versus elbow room. Malls can be easily avoided. Campgrounds…

Would a tornado ruffle feathers?

Oh, the things we imagine… watching the celebrations on the Hill, for Canada Day. On the news cutaway, a tornado warning for the area just to the north of the city. Me wondering where all those folk are going to hide, should  a twister wander their way. Really wondering if the main Cheese would show any excitement, or his hair would ruffle in the breeze. Guess I’ll never know.

My new colour-coded calendar

Today, the federal government proved that insanity is an acceptable state of mind. A pipeline, from Alberta, through the Rockies all the way to the British Columbia coast; approved (with conditions). This is not good, on so many levels.

Bug in a box

Since I should not let a day go by without learning something, I pay attention to the little things. Did you know that making aoili is a noisy affair? To be fair, I had never seen the term before today, and apparently it goes well with lobster. I did cook a lobster, but I already knew how that worked. Boil water, wait, remove a red bug and go on to other things.

The quietly optimistic dog

In the news, a woman in Ottawa has complained that the tax people wrongly took some of her money. In related news, that happens to just about everyone I know. The “victim” or “perpetrator” (all in your point of view) admits that she submitted paperwork that had errors.  Songs in the key of life, anyone? I know, an easy to scoff story. Wouldn’t want it to happen to me, etc. Wait until someone slips the real news to this woman; unless she gets much, much richer, she’s going to have this kind of woe almost every year, from now until the year after she checks out. Sorry.

Too many apple seeds

Given that we spend our money for a broken political system, and the politicians in charge tend to be largely invisible, there’s good reason for the derision aimed at the big names on the Hill. Only on a rare occasion do we think of them as individuals, with obvious personality. That’s why today’s headline came as a shock.

The season ended my boots

Almost twenty-four hours have passed; can we stop talking about the elections already? I jest, barely. Never has such a massive change in direction received so little conversation time. Other than my newspaper, which went to bed just after me, nothing. Not on the bus. Not on the street. Not at all.
