Too many apple seeds

posted in computing, politics |

Given that we spend our money for a broken political system, and the politicians in charge tend to be largely invisible, there’s good reason for the derision aimed at the big names on the Hill. Only on a rare occasion do we think of them as individuals, with obvious personality. That’s why today’s headline came as a shock.

One of the ministers of the Crown with long experience, most of it positive, stepped down just over a month ago. Retirement. Career realignment. Recovery from the side effects of health issues. Today, he died. Mr. Flaherty, I salute you.

Our weekly department meeting carried some interesting news today. The school board has been sowing technology seeds that may (from where I sit) turn into weeds. Or apple trees. Not sure. “We” now have about eight hundred iPads in the system, and the roots are not well set. No backup strategy. No clear policy for who does what in the care and reprogramming dossier. No plan for replacing those pesky battery packs in a year or two. By the time the problems start to appear, I should be doing something else, but I wish we didn’t chase the shiny toys.

Temperature in the back yard rose past the 12C point this afternoon. That’s really good news.

And the Heart Bleed bug has the undivided attention of those who care for their servers. I’ll leave you to look up the collateral damages, but anything that exposes the weak passwords of the nation is not good computer science.
