Retraining, on my own dime

By going for coffee, in a real coffee bar this morning, I stepped outside my comfort zone. Long enough to reaffirm just how good my home coffee is.

Name recognition?

So, you have a painting, and it might be a portrait of a famous author. What next? After reading a story on the CBC website, I just don’t know. First of all, the author isn’t Shakespeare. So now we get into the “why bother?” section of the argument.

Still subject to pointy eye pokes

I’m starting to figure out just how much wiggle room is allowed before someone is declared late for an appointment, locally. Today, we came in after the scheduled time, by about seven minutes and nary a frown was directed. I guess people accept that travel in snow season takes whatever time it takes.

Increased flow

I grew up consuming media, of one sort; the printed page. Books, magazines, newspapers.  All rooted in classic paragraph format. I’m a late comer to the stuff I now watch.

Look at all the accomplished among us

Once or twice a year, my old school gets in touch. Always good to hear from the place, even if their motives are suspect. You see, the school lusts after my wealth.

Adding books and patch cords

After learning that a research book I had requested was now available, it was time to go to the city. With good weather, and a full tank of gas, we were off . Now, I have other research resources available, but this was a new book, written by a local person, and I have a space on the shelf. Kismet!

Applied science

I need to record that snowstorms are finicky. We were ready for the biggest of the year, yesterday. We got nothing! In fact, due to the rain component, we have lost the majority of our snow cover, which displays the ability of our dog to mark where he squats. Oh, sure, there’ll be more, but right now it looks very spring like.  Cold to the point of absurd, but spring like. And the school closures? Pay no attention to that.

Among my personal goals

We all have goals. Today, I reached one, by marking two years of second language study. Not intensively, but assiduously, I have managed to complete three exercises per day from a course of study, reaching seven hundred and thirty consecutive logins. I’m proud of myself. That was done without distraction from illness, or travel, or slow internet. And I don’t intend to stop, just yet.

Bricks and time

While watching some “old” TV, produced in the previous century, I found myself saying “Whoa!” Some of the things that are stated by various people would not pass the PC test any more. And that’s a good thing.

Quality verified

I went to a small university. Small campus, small population, small scope. The idea that someone would come from “far away” was not part of the day to day. Sure, we had a few people that didn’t come with the baggage of a Canadian upbringing; postal code, provincial bias, high school jackets. But, they were rare. Anyone that did happen to stumble off the ferry, or out of the EPA Boeing 737 onto the tarmac, was welcomed.
